Ferrari 499P Centenary Winner Edition: Bringing the Hypercar Steering Wheel into the World of Sim Racing

Inspired by the steering wheel of the Ferrari 499P that conquered the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Thrustmaster Ferrari 499P Centenary Winner Edition was created as an exceptional piece of engineering: a bridge between top-level endurance racing and the world of sim racing.

Far more than a visual replica, this wheel captures the DNA of the Ferrari 499P cockpit while adapting it to the specific demands of virtual racing. The objective was clear: to preserve the intensity, precision and unmistakable identity of the original steering wheel while delivering ergonomics designed specifically for sim racers on PC and consoles.

Directly Inspired by the Ferrari 499P Steering Wheel

In an endurance Hypercar, the steering wheel is much more than a means of controlling the car’s direction. It is a fully integrated command center, allowing drivers to manage essential information, adjust race settings and interact with the vehicle throughout hours of intense competition.

#51 FERRARI AF CORSE (ITA) Ferrari 499P (HYPERCAR) Alessandro Pier Guidi (ITA) James Calado (GBR) Antonio Giovinazzi (ITA)

The Ferrari 499P Centenary Winner Edition embraces this philosophy. Its design, backlit controls, encoders, integrated display and premium construction reflect a clear ambition: to bring sim racing enthusiasts closer to the unique environment of a modern endurance racing cockpit.

Every detail has been designed to evoke the real car while meeting the demands of intensive home use, with a focus on comfort, readability, compatibility, immersion and on-track efficiency.

Redesigned Grips for Greater Sim Racing Comfort

One of the most important adaptations concerns the wheel’s grips.

On the real Ferrari 499P, the grips are designed for professional racing drivers wearing thick, fire-resistant gloves suited to the extreme conditions of endurance racing. While this ergonomics makes perfect sense in real-world competition, it is not necessarily ideal for sim racing, where players often drive without gloves or wear much thinner ones.

We therefore redesigned the shape of the grips to provide a more natural and comfortable hold, better suited to long virtual racing sessions. This adaptation preserves the spirit of the original steering wheel while enhancing the feel and usability for sim racers.

The result is a more accessible, precise and comfortable driving experience over extended periods, without compromising the distinctive visual identity of the Ferrari 499P steering wheel.

A Translucent Front Plate Designed to Enhance the Backlighting

The front plate of the Ferrari 499P Centenary Winner Edition is made from a translucent material, echoing the visual character of the Ferrari 499P steering wheel while allowing the backlighting to shine through with precision.

This material choice addresses an essential requirement: delivering a clear, consistent and immersive interface, particularly in the low-light conditions that are so closely associated with endurance racing. With more than 70 integrated LEDs, the lighting system has been carefully engineered to illuminate each control precisely, without unwanted light bleeding from one button to another.

This meticulous approach to lighting strengthens the sense of immersion and gives the wheel a striking visual presence, true to the atmosphere of a modern competition cockpit.

Center Encoders Inspired by the Le Mans-Winning 2023 Ferrari 499P

The three central rotary encoders feature the colors of the Italian flag, directly referencing the 2023 Ferrari 499P. This design choice pays tribute to a car that became an icon after winning the centenary edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Beyond their functional purpose, these encoders play an important role in defining the wheel’s identity. They reflect Ferrari’s heritage, the brand’s Italian roots and the unique history of this victorious 499P.

While the encoders found on more recent competition steering wheels may feature different designs, we chose to remain faithful to the spirit of the 2023 Ferrari 499P for this edition, celebrating that historic moment with precision and authenticity.

A 4.3-Inch Display Engineered for Sim Racing

The real Ferrari 499P steering wheel features a larger display. For the Ferrari 499P Centenary Winner Edition, we integrated a 4.3-inch LCD screen developed specifically for the sim racing ecosystem.

This format maintains excellent readability for essential information while ensuring a balanced integration within the wheel’s overall design. The screen displays the Ferrari 499P dashboard and can show up to 140 parameters, allowing drivers to monitor key data throughout a race.

This approach preserves the immersion and identity of the original cockpit while providing an experience suited to sim racing setups, the technical requirements of different platforms and the everyday needs of players.

An Interface Optimized for PC and Consoles

Another significant adaptation concerns the number of thumb encoders. The real steering wheel features an interface designed around the highly specific requirements of a competition Hypercar. For sim racing, we chose to optimize the interface in order to provide a consistent and intuitive experience on both PC and consoles.

The Ferrari 499P Centenary Winner Edition features four aluminum thumb encoders, three central rotary encoders and up to 25 configurable actions. This level of control already makes it possible to take full advantage of the available functionality, particularly on consoles, where the number of usable inputs may be limited by the platform or the game itself.

Rather than adding controls that could become redundant or only partially supported depending on the platform, we adopted a more considered approach: delivering a complete, consistent and premium experience, regardless of the player’s gaming environment.

A Hand-Molded Carbon Fiber Rear Plate

The Ferrari 499P Centenary Winner Edition also stands out through its hand-molded carbon fiber rear plate. This material immediately strengthens its connection to the world of motorsport, where carbon fiber is valued for its low weight, rigidity and unmistakable technical appearance.

Beyond its structural role, this component gives the wheel a truly premium dimension. Each rear plate has its own individual finish, with the subtle variations and reflections characteristic of genuine carbon fiber. The result gives the wheel a powerful visual presence that feels simultaneously sporty, technical and exclusive.

The hand-molding process further emphasizes the exceptional nature of this limited edition. It reflects a commitment to craftsmanship and attention to detail that goes far beyond creating a purely visual reproduction. On a wheel inspired by a Le Mans-winning Hypercar, this carbon fiber component helps transform the product into something that is at once high-performing, immersive and collectible.

A Collector’s Piece Designed to Be Raced

Limited to just 499 individually numbered units, the Ferrari 499P Centenary Winner Edition is more than a sim racing wheel: it is also a collector’s piece. Its molded carbon fiber rear shell, six adjustable paddles, integrated display, backlit interface and dedicated display stand make it a product designed for both performance and presentation.

Its ambition, however, extends far beyond display. This wheel was created to be used: to experience the intensity of endurance racing, complete virtual stints and give sim racers a direct connection to the world of the Ferrari 499P.

The aim was therefore not to reproduce every element of the real steering wheel without compromise. It was to translate the essence of this competition steering wheel into a product capable of delivering an authentic, comfortable and immersive experience at home.

Where Ferrari Heritage Meets Thrustmaster Precision

With the Ferrari 499P Centenary Winner Edition, we have created a faithful and carefully considered interpretation of a steering wheel that has become a symbol of performance, innovation and endurance racing.

Every adaptation serves a clear purpose: improving comfort, deepening immersion, ensuring compatibility and delivering an experience that sim racers can fully enjoy. The grips have been redesigned for virtual racing, the backlighting has been optimized for greater readability, the display has been integrated in a format suited to sim racing, and the control interface has been engineered to provide a consistent experience across PC and consoles.

The result is a wheel that honors the legacy of the Ferrari 499P while fully embracing its purpose: bringing the spirit of the Le Mans-winning Hypercar into the setups of passionate sim racers.
